Microscopy Flashcards
scanning lens
The smallest power lens at 4x, used when first locating a specimen. Also useful when viewing large parasites
low power lens
At 10x magnification, this lens is useful for viewing parasites found in fecal slides
high power lens
40x-50x magnification and are used for small specimens such as urine sediments
oil immersion
95x-100x magnification is used with oil to improve resolution when used to view blood smears and bacterial smears such as platelets and yeast
ocular
microscope eyepiece, 5x-10x
nosepiece
located above the objective lenses
objective lens
the lenses attached to the revolving nosepiece
base
the stand of the microscope
arm
the back support of the microscope
light source
located on the base, and under the condensor
condensor
located above the light source, some may be adjusted for improved resolution of the slide
iris(aperture) diaphram
located below the condensor, controls the amount of light coming up through the condensor
light switch
usually located on the side of the base, controls the light source power
rheostat
located below the light source on the base, regulates the intensity of the light coming from the lamp or light source.
coarse adjustment knob
located on the arm of the microscope and is the larger of the two knobs, used during low power work to move the stage up and down to bring the slide into view
