Microscopy Flashcards
Parameters
Magnification, contrast and resolution
Light Microscope
Visible light passes through the specimen then through one (simple) or two (compound) glass lenses. Lenses refract light so image of specimen is magnified into eye
Transmission Electron Microscope
Beam of electrons is passed THROUGH a thin section and the electrons that pass through fall on photographic film to reveal image of interior of specimen
Scanning Electron Microscope
Electrons are reflected off a specimen covering with an electron dense material (gold) to produce 3-D image of SURFACE of a specimen
Visible Light
Wavelength, focus with glass lenses, coloured image
Poor resolution=Lower magnification
Electron
Particles, focus with electromagnets, B+W image
Good resolution=Higher magnification
