Microscopes and Cell Theory Flashcards
Who named the cell?
Robert Hooke
Who discovered plant cells?
Matthias Schleiden
Who discovered animal cells?
Theodore Schwann
Who discovered cell division?
Rudolf Virchow
What are the three components of cell theory?
(1) All living things are made of cells
(2) Cells are the basic unit of life, structure, and function
(3) Cells can only come from other cells
What was the theory of spontaneous generation?
The idea that cells came from nothing; later disproved
Which two scientists helped to disprove spontaneous generation?
Louis Pasteur, who studied mold on covered and uncovered broth; and Francesco Redi, who studied maggots on covered and uncovered meat
Why are cells so small?
Cells need a high surface are in order for their plasma membranes to be able to efficiently pass nutrients in and out of the cell, and having a small volume means a larger proportional surface area.
What would you use a compound light microscope for?
CLMs are typically used to observe living specimens
What would you use transmission electron microscope for?
TEMs are used to see inside prepared (dead) specimens
What would you use a scanning electron microscope for?
SEMs are used for viewing the outside surface of a dead or prepared specimen
What is the resolution and magnification of a SEM?
Resolution: 2nd place
Magnification: 100,000x
What is the resolution and magnification of a TEM?
Resolution: 1st place
Magnification: 500,000x
What is the resolution and magnification of a CLM?
Resolution: 3rd place
Magnification: 1,000x
