microscopes Flashcards
Simple Microscope
1 lens (magnifying glass)
Compound Microscope
Lets light pass through an object then through 2 lens
Stereoscopic Microscope
-gives 3D view of object
-used for dissections
Contrast
Cells appear colourless until stained
Resolution
ability to distinguish between details
Electron Microscope
-uses a beam of electrons to magnify image
-can achieve 3D images
Scanning electron microscope
produces 3D image of specimens surface features
Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)
-provides for detailed study of internal ultra structure
-electron beam passes through for 2D image
-aka electron micrograph
Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (CLSM)
-laser used to illuminate spots
-images sent to computer to generate a 3D image
-used for specimens too big for light microscopes
Microscope Magnification
as magnification increased field of view decreases
