Microscope Required Practical Flashcards
1
Q
what are the three typical magnifications on the objective lenses
A
4x, 10x, 40x
2
Q
what is the eyepiece
A
where we look through, mag of 10x
3
Q
what is the stage
A
where we hold microscope slides, has clips to hold the slides in place
4
Q
what is the lamp
A
light underneath stage, light passes up through the microscope slide– some microscopes have mirrors beneath the stage instead to reflect light
5
Q
what is the coarse focusing dial
A
larger dial on microscope
5
Q
what is the fine focusing dial
A
smaller dial on microscope
6
Q
describe a practical to use a microscope to see a prepared slide
A
- place slide into stage and use clips to hold slide down
- select lowest power objective lense (usually 4x) and position so it almost touches the microscope by slowly turning the coarse dial, look at the microscope from the side while adjusting the coarse focusing dial to avoid damaging slide, do thus until lense is almost touching the slide
- look through eyepiece and slowly yurn coarse focusing dial to increase distance between the objective lense and slide until slide comes into focus
- use fine focusing dial to bring cells into clear focus
- now select a higher magnification and bring into focus with fine focusing dial
7
Q
what is the equation for total magnification
A
mag of eyepiece lense x mag of objective lense
