Diffusion Flashcards
define diffusion
the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
what molecules diffuse in/out of cells
oxygen, carbon dioxide and urea
how does oxygen diffuse into cells
oxygen concentration is higher in blood outside of cell than inside the cell, so it diffuses into cell where it is used for respiration
how does carbon dioxide diffuse out of cells
respiration releases carbon dioxide, causing concentration inside cell to be higher than out, meaning carbon dioxide will diffuse from inside the cell to out
how does urea diffuse out of cells
urea is a waste product produced inside cells, it diffuses out of the cells into the blood plasma and is excreted by the kidneys
what factors effect the rate of diffusion
- concentration gradient (bigger gradient= faster diffusion)
-temperature (higher temp= faster diffusion)
-surface area of cell membrane (larger surface area = faster diffusion)
