Active Transport Flashcards
1
Q
what is active transport
A
the movement of substances from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated solution (against the concentration gradient) using energy
2
Q
where do cells get energy for active transport
A
respiration
3
Q
how is active transport used in the body
A
- concentration of sugars in the lumen (cavity of the small intestine where foods are digested) is lower than the concentration of sugars inside the cells
- sugars cannot diffuse into cell
- instead sugars are carried in by active transport
- once inside the cell the sugars can then be transported into the blood and carried around the body
4
Q
how are cells that carry out active transport adpated
A
have lots of mitochondria for respiration to provide energy
5
Q
how is active transport used in plants
A
- root hair cells transport ions such as magneisum into the plant from the soil
- plants need magneisum to make chlorophyll in the leaves
-he concentration of ions in the soil is lower than the concentration inside the root hair cell so active transports used to move the ions into the cell - these ions are then transported to the xylem vessels and moved through the leaf
