Microscope Parts Flashcards
Base
The widest part that supports the microscope
Arm
The straight vertical part that connects the base to the upper portion
Head
The part that extends from the arm & connects the ocular lenses and the rotating nosepiece w/the objective lenses
Ocular lenses (eyepieces)
Lenses that you look through to observe the microscope slide. The ocular lens’ magnification power=10x
Revolving nosepiece
Holds multiple objective lenses and can be rotated to change b/tw objectives
Scanning lens
4x total magnification through ocular lenses is 10x= 40
Low-power lens
10x and total magnification through ocular lenses is 10x= 100
High power lenses
40x and total magnification through ocular lenses is 10x=400
Oil immersion lens
100x and total magnification w/ocular lenses is 10x=1000
Mechanical stage w/side clips
Flat platform located beneath the objective lenses on which the microscope slide is placed. The clips hold the slide in place.
Coarse Focus Knob
The large knob on the side towards the base that’s used w/the scanning objective only to bring the slide into focus
Fine Focus Knob
The smaller knob in the middle of the coarse knob by itself on the left hand side; knob is used w/low,high & oil immersion lenses for precision focus.
Condenser
Located below the stage; it’s function is to condense &focus the light from the substrate lamp through the specimen onto the slide
Iris Diaphragm & Iris Diaphragm lever
Located beneath the stage and used to regulate the amount(intensity) of light that passes through the condenser through a hole in the stage
Substage Lamp
Light source built into the base, controlled by the voltage control knob on the side of the microscope arm
