Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
Epithelial Tissue
Body covering (like skin), internal linings (lining of the stomach) and all glands(secretions)
Epithelial functions
Protection, secretion, sensation
Characteristics of Epithelial
- Tightly packed cells
- Avascular (no red blood cells)
- Contains many nerves
- Frequent Mitosis
- 3 surfaces; Apical, Lateral, Basal.
Simple
One row of cells
Pseudostratified
Special type of simple; looks stratified but isn’t.
Stratified
Two or more rows/layers of cells
Squamous
“Squished” shaped cell
Cuboidal
Squared shaped cell
Columnar
Column shaped cell.
Stratified squamous Epithelium
Location: epidermis (outer surface) of skin, lining of mouth, throat, vagina, anus, urethra.
Function: protection
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Location: mostly glands
Function: secretion
Glands
Epithelial tissue structure that secretes substances.
Endocrine Glands
No ducts, secretes hormones into blood stream.
Ex: thyroid, adrenal, pituitary glands and ovaries/testes
Exocrine Glands
Have ducts, secretes fluid onto body surfaces.
Ex: salivary, mammary, and sweat glands.
3 types of Exocrine glands
Merocrine, Apocrine, holocrine
