Microscope Flashcards
1
Q
Disecting (stereo) microscope
A
- to view larger organisms
- low magnification
- mono or binocular
ex: bacteria
2
Q
Compound microscope
A
- to magnify very small objects
- 40-1000x
- mono or binocular
3
Q
prepared slides
A
permanent
4
Q
wet mount slides
A
temporary
5
Q
3 major parts of microscopes
A
- lens system
- adjustable light source
- focusing mechanism
6
Q
condenser
A
light passes through condenser which focuses the light on the specimen on the slide
7
Q
iris diaphragm
A
Built into the condenser is the iris diaphragm which allows a viewer
to increase or decrease the contrast
8
Q
course focusing knob
A
object is first identified using the lowest magnification objective and brought into rough focus
9
Q
fine focusing knob
A
used after course focusing knob to bring into sharp focus
10
Q
resolution (resolving power)
A
- ability to clearly distinguish objects which are close together
- Resolving power increases as the wavelength of light used decreases and most microscopes utilize blue light which has a short wavelength to increase resolution.
