1) Pharyngitis: sore throat
2) Laryngitis: inflammation of larynx
3) Tonsillitis: inflammation of tonsils
4) Sinusitis: inflammation of sinuses
5) Epiglottitis: inflammation of epiglottis
Lower Respiratory General Diseases
1) Bronchitis: inflammation of bronchial tubes
2) Bronchiolitis: inflammation of bronchioles
3) Pneumonia: inflammation of alveoli + fluid in lungs
Streptococcal Pharyngitis/Strep Throat
Cause: Streptococcus pyogenes
Transmission: respiratory/aerosol
Sometimes causes white patch on back of throat
Scarlet Fever
Toxin produced by lysogenized S. Pyogenes
Diphtheria
Diphtheria toxin produced by lysogenized C. Deiphtheriae
Sore throat, low-grade fever, whitish membrane on tonsils
Otitis Media/Ear Infection
35% caused by S. Pneumoniae. Common in kids b/c their Eustachian tubes still horizontal and get bacteria easily in them
Bulging eardrums, pain in ears
Common Cold
50% caused by Rhinoviruses. Some caused by Noroviruses. Always caused by virus
Cough, runny nose, nasal congestion, sometimes gastrointestinal problems. NO FEVER. Symptoms 7-10 days up to 3-4 wks
Pertussis/Whooping Cough
Has capsule. Pertussis toxin
Stage 1 Catarrhal stage: like common cold, low grade fever
Stage 2 Paroxysmal stage: violent coughing fits, up to 6 wks
Stage 3 Convalescence stage
Uncommon in adults b/c vacine, but common for adults to give to babies
