A

35% caused by S. Pneumoniae. Common in kids b/c their Eustachian tubes still horizontal and get bacteria easily in them

Common Cold

A

50% caused by Rhinoviruses. Some caused by Noroviruses. Always caused by virus
Cough, runny nose, nasal congestion, sometimes gastrointestinal problems. NO FEVER. Symptoms 7-10 days up to 3-4 wks

Pertussis/Whooping Cough

A

Has capsule. Pertussis toxin
Stage 1 Catarrhal stage: like common cold, low grade fever
Stage 2 Paroxysmal stage: violent coughing fits, up to 6 wks
Stage 3 Convalescence stage
Uncommon in adults b/c vacine, but common for adults to give to babies
