Microbiology History Flashcards
what are the benefits of bacteria?
biodegradation and the production of useful products
what is biodegradation?
maintenance of soil fertility by cycling of nutrients
what is bioremidation?
removal of pollutants by microbial activity
how do bacteria form useful products?
making food/drink and therapeutics such as antibiotics
how can biodegradation be a bad thing?
causes food spoilage
in what way is bacteria harmful?
causes infectious diseases
who was the first to make a breakthrough in the microbial world? what did he find?
Robert Hooke, started the cell theory of life
who followed Robert Hooke in his findings?
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek who was the first to view micro-organisms
in what place did Edward Jenner come in historical findings?
third, he created the vaccine for smallpox in 1976
who followed Edward Jenner in making history?
Louis Pasteur, discovered the germ theory of disease
what did Louis Pasteur’s experiment involve?
allowing dust to settle in a tube connected to sterile broth and over time he allowed them to come into contact, which led to the infection of the sterile broth
what vaccinations did Louis Pasteur create?
anthrax, cholera and rabies
what did Joesph Lister do?
discovered antiseptic surgery e.g. use of carbolic acid and hand washing
what are Koch’s postulates?
the pathogen should be present in all cases and not in healthy cells, organism should be grown in pure culture, the cells from pure culture should causes disease and when isolated it looks the same as the original
what are the three domains of the tree of life?
bacteria, archaea and eukarya
