Microbiology Flashcards
Describe the broad categorisation of bacteria present in the GIT
Aerobe/anaerobe - facultative/obligate
Gram +ve/-ve
Cocci/bacilli
Describe the role bacterial play in supporting the normal function of the GIT
Synthesis and excrete vitamins e.g. Vit. K, B12, thiamine
Prevent colonisation by pathogens
Kill non-indigenous bacteria
Stimulate development of MALT (in caecum, Peyer’s patches)
Stimulate production of natural antibodies
Describe the common causes for a range of GI infections
Noma/cancrum oris –> tissue destruction (if individual is malnourished, immunocompromised etc.)
Candida albicans –> oral thrush
Strep. mutans –> dental caries/gingivitis
Strep. –> Ludwig’s angina (cervical lymph nodes)
Staph. aureus –> parotits
Strep. pyogenes/virus –> tonsillitis
H. Pylori –> gastritis
List some anaerobic zones in the GIT
Parts of mouth - tongue (deep in taste buds), biofilm between teeth, gingival crevice areas, peridontal pockets
Small bowel
