Q

What does a beta-lactam allergy look like?

A

– vague, or minor (e.g. gastrointestinal disturbance) → if appropriate, treatment with a beta-lactam is justified
– non-urticarial rash with penicillin, without angio-oedema or anaphylaxis → cephalosporins, carbapenems and monobactam could still be used with caution if appropriate
– urticarial rash or angio-oedema or anaphylaxis → all beta-lactams are contraindicated
