Microbiology 101 Flashcards
Why were the Koch’s postulates created?
To introduce criteria necessary to associate a microorganism to a disease.
Koch’s postulates
The bacterium should be associated with the lesions of the disease (1), possible to isolate in pure culture from said lesions (2), that pure culture should be able to replicate the lesions on suitable laboratory animals (3) and from those lesions in animals, it should be possible to reisolate the bacterium once more (4).
Bacteriophages
Viruses that attack bacteria.
Anaphylaxis
A life threatening allergic reaction.
Basic description of a bacteria.
Unicellular prokaryotic microorganism with no chlorophyll and a peptidoglycan cytoplasmic membrane.
Prokaryotic
A cell with no nuclear membrane and one circular chromosome.
Cocci
Round or oval bacteria
Bacilli
Rod shaped bacteria
Vibrios
Comma, curved shaped bacteria
Spirilla
Rigid spiral shaped bacteria
Spirochetes
Flexous spiral bacteria
Actinomycetes
Branching filamentous
Mycoplasmas
Cell wall deficient, no stable morphology
