Biochemistry 101 Flashcards
The “guiding rules” to understand at a molecular level the chemical processes associated with living cells.
ISOLATE molecules, DETERMINE structures and ANALYZE processes.
Homogenate.
The product of homogenizing (making homogeneous).
Acidosis
Usually happens because of diabetic ketosis or lactic acidosis.
Alkalosis
Usually happens after vomiting
Lactic acidosis
Process in which, due to lack of oxygen in some cells, occurs fermentation, producing lactic acid and acidifying the blood. Usually happens during exercises, when there oxygen demand is higher.
Vomiting
Loss of HCl by the stomach.
Nephogenic diabetes insipidus
Inability to concentrate urine or adjust extracellular osmosis, due to unresponsiveness from renal tubular receptors to ADH (anti-diuretic hormone).
Diabetic ketosis
Body breaks fat for energy supply, instead of glucose. Produces ketones in the process, acidifying the blood.
Water has a _____ dielectric constant. That means it has a ____ ability to store electrical energy.
High. High.
What is the dielectric constant is inversely proportional to?
The strength of interaction from two opposite charged molecules.
How does water fold amphipathic biomolecules?
It tends to fold to position the polar and charged groups on the surface to maximize energetically favorable charge.
Why do hidrophobic things tend to self associate near water?
To minimize unfavorable energetic interactions by restricting the freedom of movement of water molecules and restraining the energetically favorable interactions.
