Anatomical position
Standing straight with eyes looking forwards, both arms by the side of body, palms facing forwards, both feet together.
Supine position
Laying on your back with eyes looking upwards, both arms by the side of body, palms facing forwards, both feet together.
Prone position
Lying on his/her face, chest and abdomen.
Lithotomy position
Lying on her back with legs up and feet supported in straps.
Midsagittal plane
Equal right and left halves
Coronal plane
Anterior and posterior
Transverse plane
Upper and lower parts
Ipsilateral
On the same side of the body as another structure
Contralateral
On opposite side of body from another structure.
Flexor
Font of upper limb
Extensor
Back of upper limb
Medial border of the lower limb
From the halux (big toe) to the thigh.
Rostral
Towards the Head
Caudal
Towards the tail.
Synovial joints
Fluid filled cavity within a fibrous capsule, moves in different planes.
Abduction
Taking away from body/medial plane
Adduction
Taking close to the body/medial plane
Supination
Palm facing upwards/fowards
Pronation
Palm facing downwards/backwards.
Dorisflexion of foot
Sole faces fowards, clown’s foot
Plantarflexion of the foot
Sole of food (plantar) faces backwards, bailarina’ s foot.
