Microbes called infections
What are microbes that cause diseases called?
Pathogens
How are diseases caused?
Viruses, bacteria, fungi, protists
How do microbes enter your body?
Orifices such as ears, eyes, nose, mouth, genitals, cuts on skin
What do microbes do once inside?
Damage cells and release toxins, these are symptoms
How does body stop microbes entering ?
Enzymes in mucus, tears, saliva, coughing/sneezing, specialised cells with cilia, intact skin, mucus producing cells, acid in salt/sweat, stomach acid, useful bac out compete harmful, anti-bac in semen, vag secretions, acidic salty urine flushes microbes out.
What are the nose, trachea and air tubes inside lungs lined with?
Special cleaning cells and mucus
What do cleaning cells have on surface?
Cilia
What do cilia do?
Waft up dirty mucus to throat where swallowed and killed by stomach acid
What does cigarette smoke do?
Stops cilia beating
What happens if the cilia doesn’t beat
Build up of dirty mucus in air tubes, leads to chest infection
What happens to the airtubes when you smoke?
Swollen and sore, bronchitis
