Microbes Flashcards
Virus structure
Nucleic acid (RNA or DNA), protein code, envelope, spikes
Different bacteria shapes
Coccus, spirillus, bacillus
Bacteria structure
Plasma membrane, periplasmic space, peptidoglycan
Aerobes and anaerobes
Aerobes – can survive in the presence of
oxygen
Anaerobes – can survive in the absence of
oxygen
Obligate aerobes and obligate anaerobes
Obligate aerobes – require oxygen for survival
Obligate anaerobes – require oxygen-free
environment for survival (unless able to form
spores)
Difference between endotoxins and exotoxins
Exotoxins are deliberately released. Endotoxins are an inherent part of the bacteria and are released when bacteria break down.
Types of fungi and parasites
Yeasts (single celled) and molds (multicellular).
Protozoa (single celled) and helminths (multicellular).
Streptokinase
Dissolution of clots through conversion of plasminogen to plasmin
