Microanatomy- Uterus, Cervix, And Vagina Flashcards
What are some characteristics of myometrium?
Thickest layer, made up of 3 smooth muscle layers that get bigger w/preg
What are the 3 tissue layers of the uterus from innermost out?
Endometrium, myometrium, perimetrium
What stimulates myometrium contraction?
Oxytocin, prostaglandins
What inhibits myometrium contraction?
Progesterone, relaxin
What are the layers of the endometrium?
Lamina propria (glands and blood vessels), stratum functionalis, stratum basalis
What is the stratum functionalis?
Temporary layer at luminal surface that responds to ovarian steroids by thickening and then shedding at menses
What is the stratum basalis?
Thinner, deeper permanent layer containing basal portions of endometrial glands that are retained during menses
What do the spiral arteries supply?
Endometrium
What do the straight arteries supply?
Stratum basalis
What are the functions of the cervix?
Admit and store sperm, protect uterus from bacteria
What are the layers of the cervix?
Mucosa and muscularis
What are the fxns of cervical mucus?
Increases in volume and elasticity until ovulation d/t estrogen
Allows sperm to pass at time of ovulation
During luteal phase, mucus is minimal and viscous to prevent sperm from passing
What are the characteristics of muscularis layer?
Lots of fibrous CT. Collagenase activity causes cervix to dilate during labor
What are the 3 layers of the vaginal wall?
Mucosa, muscularis, adventitia
Characteristics of vaginal mucosa?
No glands, low pH, capillary plexus provides vaginal fluid during arousal
