Female Repro Physio Flashcards
What hormones act on granulosa cells?
LH and FSH
What hormone acts on theca cells?
LH
What is responsible for androgen synthesis?
Theca interna
What is the rate limiting step of hormone synthesis?
LH stimulates conversion of cholesterol to pregnenolone
What is the hormone synthesis pathway?
Pregnenolone to progesterone to androstenedione which is carried to granulosa cell
What happens in granulosa cells?
Estrogen synthesis. Under FSH control, androstenedione converted by aromatase to estrone and estradiol. FSH also stimulates production of new LH receptors
What happens in corpus luteum?
Theca derived cells make estrogen under influence of LH
Granulosa derived cells can produce androgen
Progesterone directly secreted
How are steroid hormones transported?
Estradiol binds to shbg
Progesterone binds to CBG (corticosteroid binding globulin, transcortin)
What are some of the effects of estrogen?
Help promote growth spurt and epiphyseal closure
Increase Hdl, decrease ldl
Fat deposition
Promote endometrial growth,
