Microanatomy- Ovaries and Fallopian tubes Flashcards
What is a primordial follicle?
Primary oocyte w/ single layer of granulosa cells (simple squamous)
Describe the process of oogenesis
As a fetus, oogonia undergo mitosis
Meiosis begins, but not completed- primary oocytes
Meiosis continues in puberty (one a month becomes secondary oocyte) and is ovulated
If fertilized, meiosis II is completed
What is a primary follicle?
Primary oocyte w/ more granulosa cells (undergoing hyperplasia b/c fsh). Formation of zona pellucida, theca externa and theca interna
What does the zona pellucida do?
Separates oocyte from surrounding follicular cells. Sperm binding, prevents fertilization by multiple sperm, protects early embryo
What does theca interna responsible for?
Steroid production
What is a secondary (antral) follicle?
Primary oocyte w/ antral cavity w/in follicle
What is a mature (tertiary/Graafian follicle)?
Secondary oocyte surrounded by corona radiata w/ cumulus oophorus
What is corona radiata?
Innermost granulosa cell layer surrounding secondary oocyte
What does cumulus oophorus do?
Anchors secondary oocyte to wall of ovary
What are the stages of folliculogenesis?
Primordial follicle, primary follicle, antral follicle, Graafian follicle
What are the regions of the Fallopian tubes from distal to proximal?
Infundibulum, ampulla, isthmus
What does the infundibulum have?
Fimbriae which help catch oocyte. Opens near ovary
What is the most common site of fertilization in the Fallopian tubes?
Ampulla. Contains extensive branched mucosal folds
What part of Fallopian tube is the site of sperm storage?
Isthmus
What filters out abnl sperm?
Utero-tubal junction
