Micro/Virology Flashcards
What are the two most common modes of acquiring a C.diff infection that produces a dangerous level of toxins?
Antibiotic use and fecal oral transmission
Enterotoxin B (which is an exotoxin) in C. diff has what actions; is it more or less destructive than A?
Actin depolymerization, cytoskeleton destruction and is essential to virulence and stronger than exotoxin A.
As a physician what some ways you can reduce C.diff spread?
Antibiotic stewardship, and wearing gloves
Is C.diff normal microbiotic flora in the gut?
Yes for some.
Which bacterial species can form endospores when in nutrient depleted environments?
Clostridium and Bacillus species. Gram +
Astrovirus; describe it
Icosahedral, naked, +ssRNA linear
Shaped like a star, fecal oral transmission,
mild gastroenteritis self limited
