What is re-feeding syndrome and why is it so problematic? What is the pathology involved? How do you treat it?

A

This is when someone goes days without eating and then starts up again. This causes electrolyte abnormalities like decreased: phosphate, potassium, Mg, and thiamine,as well as, increased insulin leading to hypoglycemia.

Treat with fluid/electrolyte replacement and monitoring, and Liver aminotransferases, as well as, cardiac monitoring (chest x-ray).
