Micro- Parasitic Infections Flashcards
Where is trypansoma cruzi typically found? What disease does it cause?
- in central and south america
- american trypansomiasis (Chagas Disease)
How is trypanosoma transmitted?
- by reduviid bugs
- they bite you and poop out the parasite, you scratch the bite and introduce the parasite to your system.
What is the progression of Chagas disease?
Asymptomatic from the ouset, permanent damage is not notice until years later.
-fibrosis of the myocardium and purkinje fibers
What is the affect of Chagas disease (american trypanomiasis) on the heart?
- enlargement of the heart
- cardiac arrhythmias
- heart failure
How does on acquire Taenia solium?
-by eating undercooked infected pork
Where are the larvae of taenia solium located? Where do they mature?
- the larvae are located in muscle tissue
- they mature in the intestine into mature tapeworm
How does T. solium eggs get back to the pork?
-human feces ingested by pigm contain eggs which hatch and travel through the pigs body to the muscle and blood
What is trichinella spiralis generally found in? Why is it dificult to treat?
- Generally found in bear meat
- hard to treat because it is normally not found until it has already penetrated striated muscle cells
What is trichinella spiralis?
Spiral shaped nematode found in almost all mammals
Why does trichinilla spiralis cause muscle pain?
-becuase it embeds in striated muscle
What is sarcocystis? (think about it)
- Rare muscle parasite
- causes muscle cysts in human muscle
- undercooked meat
What is the amastigote stage of parasitic development?
- intracellular lifecycle stage
- no flagella or cilia
Describe the trypomastigotic stage of parasitic development.
- in the blood
- infective stage, characteristic of trypanosoma
What are the drugs benznidazole and nifurtimox used to treat?
-Chagas disease resulting from trypanosomiasis infection
What causes cysticerosis?
tapeworm larvae crossing the intestinal wall and embedding in human muscle
