Micro Organisms And Diseases Flashcards
What is a micro-organism or microbe
Small organisms that cannot be seen with the naked eye
What is unicellular
Means consisting of one cell
What does multicellular mean
Means Consisting of many cells
What is microbiology
The study of microorganisms
What are the different types of micro organisms
Prokaryotic and eukaryotic
What are some examples of prokaryotes
Bacteria, archaea,
What are some examples of eukaryotic organisms
Fungi, protists, plankton and planarian
What does prokaryotic mean
Cells that have nuclear material but no true nucleus
What does eukaryotic mean
Cells that have a true nucleus
What does akaryotic mean
Organisms that don’t have cells with cytoplasm or nucleus
Where do microorganisms live
Microorganisms live in all parts of the biosphere where there is liquid water, including soil, hot springs, on the ocean floor, high in the atmosphere and deep rocks within the earths crust
What are some examples of micro organisms that are that are harmful to us and we don’t like
Vibrio cholera, salmonella bacteria and clostridium botulinum
How does cholera infect people
It is spread via contaminated water and food
What is the effect of cholera once infected
It causes profuse diarrhea, which if not treated to replace fluids in the body, will lead to death
What are some ways to prevent cholera
Avoid drinking dirty/unsanitary water
How does salmonella bacteria infect people
Are carried in infected poultry meats and eggs. Are found in water or food contaminated with decal material from carriers of salmonella
What are the effects of the salmonella bacteria
They invade the intestinal lining cells and can cause typhoid
How can we prevent salmonella bacteria
Don’t eat raw eggs or meat, chopping boards used for cutting chicken dishes should be washed with soap and hot water
How does clostridium botulinum infect people
From eating some sausages and home canned vegetables
What are the effects of clostridium botulinum
Cause flaccid paralysis with respiratory paralysis and death if untreated
What is the general structure of a virus
Look at diagram and be able to label, capsid, protein molecules and DNA/RNA genetic code
