What is Cisterna d’Asti?
Rosso and Rosso Superiore DOC based on Croatina.
Croatina is frequently called, but unrelated to, Bonarda, Uva Rara, or even Nebbiolo. Locally known as Bonarda in some locations, especially in Oltrepò Pavese, but is not the same as the Bonarda of Piemonte
What is Terre Alfieri?
DOC based on Arneis or Nebbiolo (min 85% stated variety). Also available with a ‘Vigna’ designation
What is Calosso?
DOC based on Gamba Rossa (IWC says a half hectare planted in Piedmont…)
Available in Rosso, Rosso “Passarà” (appassimento), and Rosso Vigna/Riserva
What is Albugnano?
Rosato, Rosso and Rosso Superiore DOC made from a minimum 85% Nebbiolo
What is Loazzolo?
Sweet wine DOC based on Moscato Bianco (100%). Grapes must be harvested after September 30 and affected by Botrytis.
Minimum potential alcohol is 15.5% (11% actual) with a minimum 50gL RS. Reminds me of Cadillac numbers…
What is Gabiano?
DOC based on 90-95% Barbera and available in Normale and Riserva bottlings
What is Rubino di Cantavenna?
Tiny DOC based on Barbera blends
What is Strevi?
Passito style DOC based on 100% Moscato Bianco.
Has a minimum potential alcohol of 20% (12.5% acquired)
What is Boca?
DOC in Northern Piedmont based upon Nebbiolo, backed by Uva Rara and Vespolino.
Conti is best producer
What is Bramaterra?
Spanna-based DOC in Northern Piedmont
What is Colline Torinese?
DOC just on the opposite side of Turin from Monferrato.
Produces rosso based on Barbera and varietal wines
What is Fara?
Nebbiolo-based DOC.
Not to be confused with Faro DOC in Sicilia
What is Lessona?
DOC based on Nebbiolo in northeastern Piedmont
What is Sizzano?
Spanna based DOC
What is Valsusa?
DOC in the western Alps made from Avanà, Barbera, Dolcetto, and Neretta Cuneese
