Micro Biology Flashcards
Bacteria
Larger than viruses.
Simple, singled-celled : no nucleus
Divided into aerobes and anaerobes
Reproduce asexually
Aerobe
Need oxygen
Anaerobes
Do not need oxygen
Asexually
Clone
Double numbers every 20 minutes
In order to grow bacteria need:
Food
Water
Suitable pH
Suitable temperature
Soil bacteria
Break down (decompose) dead plant and animal material to release nutrients into the soil.
Uses of bacteria
Decay wastes
Make cheese, yoghurt, insulin and silage
Harmful bacteria
Causes disease
Food spoilage
Tooth decay
Fungal cell
Similar to plant cell but does not process chlorophyll (is not green and cannot make food)
Microbiology
The study of small living things (viruses, bacteria, fungi)
Fungi
Fungal cell similar to plant cell but does not process chlorophyll (is not green and cannot make food).
Parasite
Obtain their food from feeding on other living organisms
Saprophyte
Obtain their food either from dead organisms or from their wastes
Some examples of fungus
Athletes foot
Mushrooms
Yeasts
Black bread mound
Fungi used in
Brewing, baking, making antibiotics and some are edible
