MHSET Studying Flashcards
Define: Land as soon as Practicable
means that extended flight is not recommended, the landing site and flight duration are at the discretion of the aircraft captain
Define: Land as soon as possible
means that continued flight is not recommended; land at the first site at which a safe landing can be made.
Define: Land immediately
means that an immediate landing/ditching is mandatory. The consequences of continued flight are more hazardous than those of landing at a site normally considered unsuitable.
Define: Warning
Warnings are used to emphasize an operating or maintenance procedure, practice, condition, statement, etc., which, if not strictly observed, could result in injury to or death of personnel.
Define: Caution
Cautions are used to emphasize an operating or maintenance procedure, practice, condition, statement, etc., which, if not strictly observed, could result in damage to or destruction of equipment, loss of mission effectiveness or long-term health hazards to personnel.
Define: Note
Notes are used to point out a procedure, event or practice which is desired or essential to highlight.
What are the dump rates for the fuel tanks?
Max rate: 600 lbs/min
Fwd tank: 315 lbs/min
Aft tank: 365 lbs/min
(AOI 1-3-1, para 6 & 9)
What is the Basic and Max Gross weight of the Sea King?
Basic weight: 14500 lbs
Max Gross weight: 20500 lbs
(AOI 1-1-13, para 9)
What is the Max Useable Fuel when gravity/pressure fueling, and how much is un-useable?
Pressure fueling: 4043.4 lbs (35.2 lbs unusable)
Gravity fueling: 4234.8 lbs (35.2 lbs unusable)
(AOI 1-3-7, Figure 1-3-5)
When will you get a low-level fuel caution?
210 to 280 lbs per tank remain in a 3° nose-down attitude
170 to 200 lbs per tank when in a hover
(AOI 1-3-5, para 17)
When must you declare a fuel emergency ashore? At sea?
At 300 pounds total fuel remaining, the helicopter must declare an emergency and land as soon as possible. At 150 pounds remaining, an immediate landing/ditching is required.
(AOI 3-3-1 para 6 & 7, SHOPS 5-1-3 Art 5110)
When do the fuel filter bypass lights illuminate?
The fuel filter bypass caution lights will illuminate whenever the fuel filters of the respective tanks are becoming clogged. This indication will occur prior to the point at which differential fuel pressure will unseat a relief valve within the filter, resulting in unfiltered fuel bypassing the filter and being delivered to the engine.
(AOI 1-3-6, para 21)
What will cause the main, interim, or tail chip lights to illuminate?
The CHIP DET MAIN warning light illuminates when a main gear-box magnetic chip detector has picked up and retained metallic particles or chips in the oil.
The CHIP DET INTERM and CHIP DET TAIL warning lights will illuminate if a chip is detected in the respective gear-box or if the temperature in the gear box exceeds 140 ± 6 degrees Celsius
(AOI 1-4-8, para 26)
What are the 4 buses on the Sea King DC electrical system?
Power for operation of the DC electrical equipment is distributed through four buses: essential bus, primary bus, monitored bus and battery bus.
(AOI 1-5-8, para 30)
What does the Essential bus power?
The essential bus supplies power for operation of the DC flight instruments and all equipment necessary for safety of flight
(AOI 1-5-9, para 31-33)
What does the Primary bus power? ?
The primary bus supplies power to equipment necessary for completion of missions
(AOI 1-5-9, para 31-33)
What does the Monitored bus power?
The monitored bus supplies power to equipment not required for safety of flight
(AOI 1-5-9, para 31-33)
What pressure does the utility hydraulics system operate at? What about the hoist?
The utility hydraulic pump, located on the accessory drive section of the main gear-box, provides 3000 PSI hydraulic pressure. The hoist winch motor is powered by 1250 PSI hydraulic pressure from the utility hydraulic system.
(AOI 1-8-12, Para 3 & 53)
What sub-systems run off the utility hydraulic system?
Landing gear hauldown blade and pylon fold/spread rescue hoist (1250 psi) hydraulic cable reeling machine (AOI 1-8-1, para 4)
What are the breakaway weights for the haul down cable, HIFR hose and emergency messenger?
Haul down cable: 6000 ± 500 lbs
HIFR hose: 400 to 500 lbs
Emergency messenger: 50 lbs
(AOI 1-8-15 para 66, SMG 15-3 para 9d, SMG 11-9 para 43j)
What are the lowering speeds for the messenger?
0 to 10 feet: 16 feet per minute
10 to 100 feet: 200 feet per minute
