25mg po BID
What are the indications for metoprolol?
HTN, angina, prevention of MI
How does Metoprolol work?
Blocks stimulation of beta-andrenergic receptors decreases BP and HR
What are the side effects of Metoprolol?
Bradycardia, CHF, pulmonary edema, fatigue, weakness, erectile dysfunction, hypotension
What actions are taken by the nurse after admin of metoprolol?
assess HR and BP frequently during dose adjustment and periodically during therapy.
Monitor I&O and daily weights for s&s of CHF
Hold the med for Bradycardia, pulmonary edema, or heart block
What do you teach the pt and family taking metoprolol?
drug name, dose, route, and purpose. the major side effects, check BP and pulse, change position slowly, Notify MD if s&s of dyspnea, weight gain. limit intake of caffeine drinks
What other drugs should the pt beware of while taking metoprolol?
Lasix(diuretic) can cause hypotension, and Digoxin can cause bradycardia
