What is the therapeutic classification of Lasix? and the Pharmacologic?
Diuretic, and the Pharm is a loop diuretic
What are the indications for Lasix?
Edema due to heart failure, hepatic impairment or renal disease Hypertension
How does Lasix work?
It inhibits the reabsorption of sodium, chloride from the distal renal tubule. Also increases renal excretion of water, sodium, chloride, magnesium, potassium, and calcium
What are the main side effects of Lasix on F and E?
dehydration, hypochloremia, hypoK, hypomagemia, hyponatremia, hypovolemia, metabolia alkalosis
What is the adult PO dosing of Lasix for edema?
20-80mg/day initially; may repeat 6-8hrs
What is the IM and IV dosing for adults of Lasix for edema?
20-40mg, may repeat 1-2 hrs and increase by 20mg every 1-2 hrs until desired result reached
What are some lab result consierations for a pt taking Lasix?
monitor electrolytes, renaland hepatic function. watch for low serum sodium, calcium, and magnesium.
Whatis the dose of Lasix for HTN?
40mg BID initially and may adjust further based on response
What actions as a nurse do I take for Lasix? What adverse reactions should you watch for?
Assess electrolytes ensuring pt does not become hypo(electrolyte), watch BP, watch for signs of hypovolemia. Watch daily I&O.
- *Use cautiously in pt’s c Liver disease
- *Hypokalemia may increase risk of digoxin toxicity
What should I teach the pt about this medication?
Take as prescribed, missed doses should be taken ASAP and do not double dose.
- have a diet high in K+
- watch for signs of hypokalemia(muscle cramps, weakness)
