Methods of training Flashcards
What are the 4 methods of aerobic training?
Continuous training
Fartlek training
Interval training
Circuit training
What are the advantages of continuous training?
- No equipment needed
- Easy to organise and carry out
- Training can be sport specific
- Good for building aerobic endurance
What are the disadvantages of continuous training?
- Long distance can be boring
- Risk of injury on hard surface
- Only develops aerobic endurance not anaerobic endurance
What are the advantages of fartlek training?
- Can be made sport specific
- Easy to organise and carry out
- Performer can control the intensity of training
- Adds variety to training
What are the disadvantages of fartlek training?
- Need to monitor training intensity to make sure performer keeps up intensity
- Performer needs good self discipline to keep up intensity and to stick to the rest periods
What are the advantages are interval training?
- It is easy to measure progress and improvements
- You can mix aerobic and anaerobic endurance
- It’s easy to see when the athlete isn’t trying
What are the disadvantages of interval training?
- Can become boring
- Difficult to keep going for long periods
- Requires a certain level of fitness to work at a high level of intensity
What are the components of fitness that continuous training links to?
•Aerobic endurance
What are the components of fitness that interval training links to?
Aerobic endurance
Anaerobic endurance
What are the components of training that fartlek training links to?
- Aerobic endurance
* Speed
How can the FITT principles be applied to continuous training?
F - run more times over a week
I - run faster
Ti - run longer
Ty - run, walk, cycle, swim
How can the FITT principles be applied to fartlek training?
F - how many laps you do
I - work harder by doing more sprints
Ti - more laps for each time you do it
Ty - change fartlek grid by changing distance and gradient your on
How can the FITT principles be applied to interval training?
F - gradually increase time
I - work harder by doing more sprints
Ti - how long you run for
Ty - change type of training e.g. swimming and cycling
What are the advantages of circuit training?
Develops strength and endurance
Appropriate form of training for most sports
Can be adjusted to suit age, fitness and health of an athlete
Exercises are simple enough to make each athlete feel a sense of achievement in completing them
A wide range of exercises to select from which will maintain an athlete’s enthusiasm
What are the disadvantages of circuit training?
Many exercises require specialised equipment
Ample space required to set up the circuit exercises and equipment
In general can only be conducted where appropriate facilities and equipment are available
Use of additional equipment requires appropriate health and safety monitoring
