Methods of Purification Flashcards
filtration
insoluble solid from a liquid
filtration method
the insoluble solid (residue) will remain in the filter paper, while the filtrate is filtered through the filter paper and drips down the funnel into the beaker
crystallisation
soluble solid from a solution
crystallisation method
1) pour the solution into the evaporating dish
2) slowl heat the solution, some of the solvent will evaporate and the solution will get more concentrated. stop heating when crystals start to form
3) remove the dish from the heat and the rest of the solvent will slowly evaporate
4) dry the product by using a drying oven or a desicator
seperating rock salt
water is added to dissolve salt buz leave other solids undissolved
filter off the insoluble impurities
heat the salt solution and leave it to crystallise and form salt crystals
simple disstilation
1) the solution is heated. the solvent boils and evaporates
2) the vapour then evaporates and condenses in the condenser
3 it is then collected in the beaker
fractional distillation
- liquid with lower boiling point will evaporate first and rise up the fra. column
- once the other liquid is evaporating the reading on the thermometer will change
