Diffusion Flashcards
what is diffusion?
diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of their higher concentration to an area of their lower concentration, down the concentration gradient, due to the random movement of particles
describe the experiment with ammonia and hydrochloric acid
1) aqueous ammonia (NH3) gives off ammonia gas. hydrochloric acid gives of hydrogen chloride gas.
2) both gases diffuse from one end of the tube to the other. when they meet, the react to form ammonium chloride.
3) the ring doesnโt form exactly in the center of the tube, it forms nearest to the end where the hydrogen acid was.
4) this is because particles of ammonia are smaller and lighter than particles of hydrogen chloride, so they have a faster rate of diffusion, and diffue more quickly.
the _____ of different gases do not ___________ at room temperature. The _______ at which gases diffuse depends on their __________. The greater their ___________ the lower their _________.
molecules, move at the same speed, rate, molecular mass, molecular mass, rate of diffusion
