Methods Flashcards
What is a “Naturalistic observation” and what are the potential downsides
a systemic observation of a subject in a natural setting
Observer bias
Observer effects
What is Observer Bias
a change to the recorded result because of the observer
What is Observer effect?
Individuals often modify their behavior if they know they are being watched
Structured observation
Observation of behavior in settings controlled by the investigator
Inteview methods are used to?
Collect information through verbal interaction, they can be open ended or structured
What bias can be found in questionnaires and give an example
Personal bias. an example coiuld be giving socially preforable answers
What is a case study?
A study that only involves a single individual subject.
Neurobiological methods measures what? what area is this particulary prevelant in?
Relation between nervous system processes and behavior
relevant in Infant experiences
What is Habituation?
a gradual reduction in the strength of respons due to a repetitive stimulus
What is Dishabituation?
an increase in the responsivness after a stimulus change
Violation of expectation method can show what about infants?
That they prefer stimuli that is both novel and unexpected.
if they are habituated to stimulus A and are suprised with stimulus B they will become aware of it
If you want to study systematic relationships between variables, what research method is appropriate?
Correlation research
Can a Correlation study show causality?
No, only correlation, its in the name….
What defines an Experimental study?
Random allocation into experimental and control groups and an independet variable that affects a dependent variable
What kind of understanding can be found with experimental research?
Understanding causal relationships within the study enviroment. however low externa validity.
