Methodologies Flashcards
Experiments
Where cause + effect are measured , through control + manipulation of key variables, participants randomly allocated
Participant Observations
Researcher is participant- observe other participants
Non-Participant Observations
Researcher watches + records PPs without interfering
Quasi-Experiment
Research where the experiment has NOT deliberately manipulated the IV, PPs not random
Content Analysis
Involves explanation of behaviour to see what categories, codes or themes emerge, and tallying each time material fits a theme. Qualitative into Quantitative
Questionnaires
Closed/Open questions
Structured Interview
Includes standardised questions usually asked face to face
Semi-structured Interview
Asking participant questions face to face, follow up questions to expand.
Unstructured Interview
Like a conversation. Open questions
Correlational Studies
Comparing 2 co-variables, to see if there is an association, relationship between them
Case Studies
An in-depth investigation of phenomenon which was a descriptive analysis of a person, group or event. Holistic study- longitudinal
Self-reports
Participant reporting on their own thoughts and feelings through methods such as interviews or questionnaires
Cross-sectional Studies
Comparing a group of PPs representing a section in society to another
Longitudinal Studies
Research over a long period of time
Quantitative Data
Measured numerically
+ Easy to analyse with stats, easy to collect from larger samples
- Offers shallow view of behaviour, loses ‘human’ level of behaviour
