Experimental Design Flashcards
Independent Groups
When separate groups of PPs complete different conditions in a study
+ No demand characteristics. No PP will do both conditions so cannot compare, pick up cues + guess hypothesis. No order effects
- Not controlled or kept consistent. Co-variables can affect, more PPs needed-equal.
Repeated Measures
All PPs complete each condition of the study + their behaviour is compared across different tasks
+ Individual differences controlled and kept across both conditions as the PPs are the same. Reduces co-variables, fewer PPs
- Demand characteristics, order effects- PPs become better
Matched Pairs
Type of independent groups where PPs are matched by characteristics that are relevant to study, 1st completes one condition and other does 2nd
+ No demand characteristics, order effects, no covariables controlled
- Time consuming, difficult to match PPs on variables
