Metamorphic Rocks Flashcards
Slate
Lowest grade, regional metamorphism of shale or ash, foliated, slaty cleavage.
Phyllite
Low-intermediate grade, foliated, coarser grains, glossy/lustrous sheen
Schist
Intermediate-high grade, foliated, clearly visible platy minerals (biotite), garnet and staurolite porphyroblasts.
Gneiss
High grade, bands of light (quartz, feldspar) and dark (biotite) minerals
Migmatite
Mixture of igneous and metamorphic components separated into light and dark patches.
Cataclastite
Formed in brittle part of upper crust (subduction zones)
Quartzite
Metamorphism of sandstone or chert. Non-foliated texture.
Chlorite
Low grade, found in slate and phyllite
Muscovite
Intermediate grade, found in slate, phyllite, schist.
Biotite and Andalusite
Intermediate grade, found in phyllite, schist, gneiss
Garnet
Intermediate-high grade, found in phyllite, schist, gneiss
Sillimanite
High grade, found in gneiss.
