Metals & Non Metals Flashcards
How are non-metals different to metals?
They are not malleable, cannot be hammered into shapes
They are not ductile, cannot be pulled into wires
Name the 3 properties of non metals.
- They break easily
- Most are dull
- They are poor conductors of heat.
Give a few examples of non-metals
Glass, sand, clay, wood and all gases like oxygen.
What are the 6 properties of metal?
- Metals are strong and will not break if you drop them.
- Most metals are very hard
- Metals are shiny
- Metals are malleable and can be beaten into shape.
- Metals can be drawn into wires. They are ductile
- Metals melt at high temperatures
Iron is strong and hard and been used by humans for a long time. Give a couple of examples of what it is used for
Tools, nails, fence post
How is rust formed?
When iron combines with air and water
What is silver popular for?
It is a valuable metal used mostly for making jewellery
What metal is there more on earth than and give an example for what you would use it for
Aluminum and used in aircraft construction as it is light but strong.
What is an alloy?
2 or more metals mixed together or a metal mixed with a non-metal.
What is zinc?
A metal used to cover iron to prevent it from rusting. Ie: water bucket.
What would you use copper for?
It conducts (Carries) heat and electricity very well. Used for electric wires
