Metals In The Periodic Table Flashcards
What types of bonding are seen in the table
Ionic, covalent and metallic
How is the periodic table arranged?
In order of atomic number
How did Mendeleev first arrange the table?
In order of mass
What did Mendeleev’s table need modified before it became the modern periodic table?
the use of atomic number to order the elements
All atoms of the same element contain what?
The same number of protons, which is called the elements atomic number
How did Mendeleev put the elements in order of?
Their atomic mass
What group are alkali metals put in?
Group 1
What group are halogens put in?
Group 7
What group are noble gases in?
Group 0
Where are transition metals?
Middle chunk of table
Properties of alkali metals
Soft, low densities, reactive
Properties of transition metals
Unreactive
Properties of halogens
Reactive non-metals that form coloured vapours
Properties of noble gases
Unreactive non-metals
How are the particles in a metal held together?
Metallic bonds
Why do metals have high melting points?
Because it takes a lot of energy to seperate the metallic bonds
What are solid metals called?
Crystalline
What does crystalline mean?
That the particles are close together and in a regular arrangement.
Do metals have electrons?
Yes, they have loose electrons on the outer shells which form a ‘sea’.
What are all metals?
Malleable, meaning they can be hammered into shape
Why is malleability an advantage for metals?
They have more uses for it. E.g. Jewellery
What are the most common transition metals?
Iron, copper, silver and gold
Common properties of transition metals
They form coloured compounds
They are good conductors of heat and electricity
They can be hammered or bent into shape easily
