metals(electrolysis) Flashcards
electrolysis
used to separate compounds with electricity
for metals more reactive than…..
carbon
what state must the compund be in
liquid so ions can move
electrolyte
liquid/solution that can conduct electricity (ionic compound)
CATIONS
positive ions
ANIONS
negative ions
where does oxidation take place
anode
where does reduction take place
cathode
postitive ions are attracted to….
negative electrode
negative ions are attracted to….
postitive electrode
How electrolysis works:
- when a metallic compound is melted or dissolved, the ions are free to move, within the liquid or solution
- passing a current through the solution means it can be broken into elements
what substance is being broken down
electrolyte
electroplating
coating a metal with a thin layer of another metal by electrolysis
to improve the metal’s corrosion resistance
why is electrolysis used
used for metals that are more reactive than carbon
why is it expensive to melt Al
it has a high melting point
