Acids in general Flashcards
what is an acid?
Produces H+ ions when it dissociates in a solution.
an acid is any aqueous solution with a pH less than 7
what is an alkali?
Produces OH- ions when it dissociates in a solution.
(an acid is any aqueous solution with a pH greater than 7 )
ALL ALKALIS ARE BASES BUT NOT ALL BASES ARE ALKALIS
how will you know when the reaction is complete?
Effervescence stops
making copper sulfate using carbonates
stage 1:
-heat acid gently
-add access metal oxide
-colour change (colourless to blue)
stage 2 (filtration)
-excess metal oxide is separated by filtration
-filtrate is is used for crystalisation
stage 3 (crystalisation)
-salt solution is placed in evaporating bason and heated to evaporate water
-product is left at room temperature to crystalised
a metal oxide is…
insoluble
what to use to help us tell if something is an acid or alkali
universal indicator
a strong acid…
has a high concentration of H+ ions
a weak acid…
has a low concentration of H+ ions
what ions do acids contain
Hydrogen
what ions do alkalies contain
Hydroxide ions
what is neutralisation
reaction of Hydrogen and hydroxide ions, to produce water
(acid + alkali = water + salt)
all acids are
aqueous
test for hydrogen
squeaky pop
test for CO2
bubble through limewater. co2 present = milky
test for sulfate ions
- add dilute hydrochloric acid + barium chloride solution
- white ppt forms if sulfate is present
