metals and the reactivity series Flashcards
how many metals are in the periodic table
over 3 quartersof the periodic table are metals
what metals react in water
potassium sodium and calcium
what metals react with acids
magnesium aluminium zinc iron and copper
what happens to copper when reacting to acid
copper does not react with hydrochloric acid so it is the least reactive
what happens when magnesium reacts in acid
produces the most bubbles so it is the most reactive
what happens when zinc reacts with acid
zinc is more reactive than copper but less reactive than magnesium
how are flame tests carried out
a flamne test rod usually a nichrome wire is dipped into concentrated acid and placed in a bunsen burner to clean it it can be put in the acid again and then into the sample and heated in the blue flame the flame test rod should be cleaned between each sample safety glasses should be worn and care taken while using the bunsen burner
what colour does lithium change the flame to
crimson
what does sodium change the colour of the flame to
orange/ yellow
what colour does potassium change the colour to
lilac
what does calcium change the colour of the flame to
red
what does copper change the colour of the flame to
blue/green
what is a exothermic reaction
a reaction that gives out heat and increases in temperature
what is a endothermic reaction
other reactions take in heat and decrease the temperature
