Metals And Non Metals Flashcards
Minerals mined in Namibia 9
1.diamonds
2.gold
3.uranuim
4.sliver
5.copper
6.lead
7.beryllium
8.tin
9.zinc
Properties of metals
1.physical state:solids expect mercury
2.they are shiny
3.malleable
4.good conducters of heat and electricity
5.they can be pulled into a wire
6they have a high melting point boiling point and densities
7 they are strong
8they react with oxygen to form metal oxides (bases)
9most reactive metals react with water to metal hydroxide
10.they react with acid vigorously to form salt and hydrogen gas
What is reactivity series
The order of reactivity of metals according to their reactivity with other substances it starts with the most reactive metal and ends with the least reactive metal
The order of reactivity
Potassium k
Sodium Na
Calcium Ca
Magnesium Mg
Aluminium Al
Zinc Zn
Iron Fe
Tin Sn
Lead Pb
Copper Cu
Mercury Hg
Sliver Ag
Gold Au
Mild steel
Iron and carbon
It is used in car bodies and machinery bicycles wires and pipes
Brass
Copper and zinc
Ships propellers and sculptures
3bronze
Copper and lead
Door handles ships fittings and decorative
Solder
Tin and lead
Soldering which is used to join wires
Stainless steel
Car bodies bicycles wires knives and pipes
Chromium nickel and iron
Duralumin
Copper aluminum and magnesium
To make aircrafts parts
Acid rain
Acid rain is formed when non metal oxides (sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, phosphorus pentoxide,) is released into the atmosphere and adsorbe by water droplets in clouds
Equation for formation of of acid rain
Sulfur dioxide+water (rain)~sulfuric acid acid rain
Nitrogen oxide+water (rain) ~nitric acid (acid rain)
Effects of acid rain to the environment
- Damages the waxy coating of plants leaves
2prevents the formation of chlorophyll
4it corrodes buildings
What else contributes to acid rain
Burning fossil fuels (disel, petrol) wild fires and volcanoes also contribute to acid rain
