Metals and non metals Flashcards
metals (uses & properties)
metals are those solid substances which are hard malleable, ductile and good conductors of heat and energy. it is used for aking cooking utensils, construction material, vehicles, ornaments, furniture, electric wrires, weapons, etc. properties: - malleable - ductile - good conductors of heat and energy - they are shiny (lustrous) - produces tinkling sound when heate.
non metals (uses & properties)
non metals are those substances which are generally soft, non-malleable, non- ductile, and bad conductors of heat and electricity. it is used for construction works, to make containers, utensils, medicines etc.
properties:
- non malleable
- non ductile
- found in 3 state: solid, liquid and gas
- bad conductors of heat and electricity.
metalloids
metalloids are those solid substances which show the properties of both metals and non metals.
alluminium (properties &uses)
it is a bluish-white metal which is extracted from bauxite ore and is a reactive metal. thus, it is notfound in free state in nature.
properties:
- it is light metal havinf bluish- white colour.
- it is malleable and ductile.

- doesnot reacts with air, water and acids.
uses:
- used for making glass and ceramic utensils.
- used as a semi- conductor in electric equipment
- used for aking polish and colours.
positions of metal, non metal and metalloids in modern periodic table
in the periodic table, metals are places on the left side. hydrogen is a non metal which is placed at the top of metals. non metals are placed on the right side of the modern periodic table. metalloids are placed in the between metals and nonmetals in the modern periodic table because they show properties of both metals and non metals.
