Why is zinc a popular galvanising substance for iron sheets?
Also forms a protective layer, much like aluminium does
State where sodium (Na) is naturally found, and the method of extraction
Found in rock salt, extracted by electrolysis of molten salt (Basically wat Hanno wil doen…)
State where zinc (Zn) is naturally found, and the method of extraction
Zinc blende
- Heating with oxygen to form oxide, then heated with carbon
State where copper (Cu) is naturally found, and the method of extraction
Copper pyrites
- Heating with oxygen to form oxide, then heated with carbon
State where gold (Au) is naturally found, and the method of extraction
Dissolved in potassium cyanide an reduced by zinc
Write three balanced chemical equasions for the extraction of zinc from ZnS
2Zns + 3O2 -> 2ZnO 2SO2
ZnO + C -> Zn + CO
2CO + O2 -> 2CO2
Write 5 balanced chemical equasions for the extraction of iron from Fe2O3
CaCO3 -> CaO + CO2 CaO + SiO2 -> CaSiO3 (Calcium silicate) C + O2 -> CO2 CO2 + C -> 2CO Fe2O3 + 3CO -> 2Fe + 3CO2
State the uses of alloys of copper
- Coins
- Brass instruments (zinc)
- Bronze statues (tin)
Why is copper suitable for producing water pipes?
Copper can withstand water pressure and also does not corrode (unreactive)
State some uses of aluminium
- Aircraft parts (light and malleable) [Duralumin with copper]
- Overhead electricity cables
- Pots and pans
Why is zinc used to galvanise iron sheets
Zinc is more reactive and therefore does not let the iron come into contact with oxygen, which would cause rust
