metals Flashcards
what are ferrous metals
generally ferrous metals, tent to corrode (rust) so need some form of protection against corrosion. Almost all are magnetic
what are non ferrous
they do not contain iron therefore not corrode
name the 3 ferrous metals
mild steel
stainless steel
carbon steel
name the 3 non ferrous metals
copper
aluminium
brass

what is an alloy
it is a mixture of metals with other metals
what is graphene
graphene is the thinest material in the world
strongest material in the world
most conductive material in the world
most flexible material in the world
properties of mild steel
The most common ferrous Metal and the Softest one, quite a cheep and Strong Metal So it is used frequently in TD, Rust easily and can’t be hardened or tempered
properties of stainless steel
A Hard metal that won’t rust but is more expensive and harder than mild Steel
properties of carbon steel
Harder than mild Steel and Can be tempered and hardened. It will rust and it is not that easy to work.
properties of copper
Tough but easily shaped and soldered, as relatively Soft, malleable and ductile conducts heat and electicty Well, Quite expensive
properties of aluminium
Light, Soft, easily shaped and silvery in colour. Conducts heat and electricity well corrosion resistant but expensive Polishes well.
properties of brass
Heavy, quite hard and quite strong yellow in colour, looks good Malleable and ductile CORROSION resistance
What are 6 uses of mild steel
nuts
bolts
screw
stool legs
washing machine
car body
