Metallic Structures Flashcards
Name some properties of typical metals
- strong
- conducts heat
- conducts electricity
- maleable
What does a metal look like?
has large metal ions in lines that are nearly touching all with positive charge and small free electrons from outer shells of metal atoms
How do metals conduct electricity?
because it has free electrons
How do metals conduct heat?
the free electrons collide with metal ions and pass heat along
Why are metals really strong?
even though its ions are all positive (therefore they should disperse out) the the negative electrons moving around keep the metal strongly together
Why do metals have high melting points?
because it takes a lot of energy to take the giant metallic apart
Metals can be bent and shaped because….
the metal ions move and once they get in a new position the delocalised electrons form new bonds and ions stay in the new location
