Metallic Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What elements are involved?
A
two or more metals
2
Q
Are ions formed?
A
When an atom gives up their valance electron a positively charged ion is formed
3
Q
Behaviour of valance electrons
A
The valance electrons are delocalised, and continually move around the atoms, and are not associated to any specific atoms.
4
Q
Electrical conductivity
A
The delocalised electrons allows metal to conduct electricity and heat well
5
Q
Solubility
A
Metallic bonds are insoluble as these bonds are non-polar and have strong intermolecular forces
6
Q
Additional properties
A
Metallic bonds have high melting points (mercury is the exception) and they are ductile
7
Q
Examples
A
Calcium + Magnesium - CaMg2
Potassium + Lithium - KLi
