Chapter 3 Flashcards
electrostatic force
attractive or repulsive force between particles due to their electric charges
Metallic bonding
positively charged metal cations in a sea of delocalised electrons.
Properties of metals
good conductors of heat due to the mobile electrons, good conductors of electricity due to the delocalised electrons, and high-density substances because their lattices are close packed
Reactivity of metals
Reactivity decreases across the periods and increases down a group of the periodic table. The reactivity of a metal is dependent on its ability to lose electrons.
Ore
a rock containing minerals from which a valuable metal can be removed for profit
Reactions of metals with water
metal + water → metal hydroxide + hydrogen gas
metal + steam → metal oxide + hydrogen gas
Reactions of metals with acids
metal + acid → salt + hydrogen gas
Reactions of metals with oxygen
metal + oxygen → metal oxide
